COUNTRY OVERVIEW

Guatemala faces several challenges in terms of coexistence and conflict resolution, especially due to its complex ethnic, social, and political context. Violence, inequality and a lack of social cohesion remain persistent issues affecting many communities. In this context, sport has emerged as a key tool to promote integration, mutual respect, and collaboration among different groups.

In response, GIZ worked in close cooperation with the National Council for Sport, Physical Education and Recreation (CONADER) to develop and implement a training strategy aimed at embedding physical activity as a fundamental part of Guatemalan culture. The training focused on strengthening the role of sport in promoting social values, peaceful coexistence, and community engagement.

In Guatemala, workshops for community leaders, teachers and coaches focused on violence prevention and conflict resolution. GIZ designed the learning process based on the practical experiences of various organisations within the national sports system, ensuring strong local ownership and relevance.

The documents developed in Colombia were adapted for the use and context of Guatemala.

We invite you to have a look at the following teaching and learning material, which was created by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and our partner organizations in Guatemala.
