More than 20 million people in Africa (excluding the northern region) are on the move, fleeing war, violence, persecution and drought. Kenya is hosting more than 600,000 refugees from neighbouring countries. Over 290,000 refugees from diverse national, ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds reside in Kakuma in the Turkana West region. In order to promote peaceful coexistence and inclusion in the region, German Development Cooperation has focused on violence prevention through sport, in collaboration with partners in the region.
Jointly with partners, German Development Cooperation, through the "Sport for Development in Africa" (S4DA) Regional Project, developed teaching materials on how to promote peaceful conflict resolution competencies through football. The manual and drill book laid the foundation for the qualification of coaches and teachers who were mainly active in Kakuma and the Turkana West region. Equipped with new competencies and sets of sports equipment, the coaches conducted sports activities that promoted social cohesion, including on newly constructed or renovated sports grounds, and taught children and youth from the refugee and host communities how to use non-violent strategies for conflict resolution through football – both on and off sports grounds. To spread S4D in football across Kenya, the Football Kenya Foundation integrated the approach into its nationwide coaching courses (CAF C Licence Coaching Course).
S4D in education and sport policies: S4DA closely collaborated with government and non-governmental partners in the development of beneficial policies in the education and sport sector. In Kenya, thanks to embedding the S4D approach in the Physical Education and Sport policy for Basic Education (see guideline "Physical Education and Sport Policy" below), the provision of safe, inclusive and fun sport activities in formal and informal education settings for all learners was enhanced.
